Santiago to Easter Island: SCL to IPC, about five hours, no casual ferry.
Jan & Valeria. We travel to Chile often and love sharing tips to help you experience this beautiful country.
The first time we traced Rapa Nui on a map with Valeria’s family, someone joked about “just hopping over from Santiago.” Then the cousin who books flights for the family said the quiet part: there is one practical way, the seats go, and if you miss the plane you are not driving there tomorrow. In the Lake District we can change a thermal day when the gravel looks ugly. Between SCL and Mataveri you are committing to a Pacific hop.
This is the route page, not a Moai diary. Isolation is the feeling visitors meet when the continent drops away and the island is suddenly the whole horizon. It is also the risk: limited flights, extra entry steps, park rules that start before you chase photos. We treat this chapter as one we protect on a two-region trip, with Santiago nights as bookends, not as a same-day dare.
Rules and forms: how to visit Easter Island. Once the paperwork is real, open the itinerary.
The only practical way

Commercial flights connect Santiago (SCL) to Mataveri Airport (IPC) on Easter Island. There is no casual ferry alternative for visitors. LATAM operates the route. Schedules and frequency vary by season. That is the whole transportation story. Cruise fantasies and cargo-ship folklore are not a plan for a couples trip.
Chile.travel says the same thing in official language: fly from Santiago, and book well in advance, especially in high season. Their Rapa Nui notes live at this itinerary page. National hub: chile.travel/en.
If you are still deciding whether the island deserves the flight this year, read how many days on Easter Island before you buy nonrefundable extras. Three full days after arrival is a minimum. Four to five is kinder.
How long the flight actually is
Plan on about five hours in the air. Official tourism copy sometimes says five, sometimes a little over. Either way, this is not a 70-minute Temuco hop and not the two-hour Calama run. It is a long domestic-looking flight that behaves like a remote-island departure. Eat, hydrate, and do not treat it as a nap you can follow with a full site loop on landing.
Baggage rules can differ from mainland legs. Read your ticket before you pack lenses, walk-in gear, or anything heavy. Island weight limits are not the place to discover a surprise fee.
Flight timing changes Santiago hotel math. Early IPC departures and late returns often mean an extra mainland night. We would rather sleep in Providencia or Las Condes than gamble a same-evening international connection. Where to stay in Santiago is the east-side default. If the turnaround is brutal, hotels near SCL exist for that narrow case.
Book early and buffer Santiago

Seats are capacity-limited compared with Santiago to Calama. Book SCL to IPC and return as soon as your dates are real. Peak months and Chilean holidays go first. Shoulder months still fill. Isolation does not create leftover inventory because the island is small, not because nobody wants to go.
We buffer at least one Santiago night before the island flight and often one after return. A missed connection on a thin IPC schedule is a different stress than a delayed mainland hop. That is also why we install a Chile eSIM before the first SCL arrival: airline messages, hotel pins, and banking codes need to work while you are still on the continent. Easter Island eSIM covers what happens after you land in Hanga Roa.
Airport to hotel on the mainland is a separate, lived problem. Our default is east-side ride apps or a pre-booked transfer, not improvising in Centro at midnight. SCL to city center and Uber in Santiago are the city pages.
Entry and park rules before you fly
Chile entry depends on your passport. Rapa Nui adds steps on top. Official tourism currently describes a Single Entry Form shortly before the island flight, a round-trip ticket with a limited stay window, and lodging registered with SERNATUR or a formal invitation. Confirm the live list on Chile.travel’s entry page for your nationality and month. Airlines may ask at check-in. Immigration may ask again. Screenshots beat optimism.
Park access is separate. Buy through official Rapa Nui National Park channels. We confirmed the public ticket page is live at rapanuinationalpark.com. Current instructions require an accredited guide. Some sites allow one entry per ticket. Validity windows matter for a 3- to 5-day stay. CONAF’s portal is conaf.cl for national park context. We do not print ticket prices here. They move. Official pages are the list.
Complete forms before you fly, not in the jetway. Keep printed or offline copies. Honey and other agricultural items have their own rules. Declare what you must. Isolation includes biosecurity, not only distance.
Isolation is the point and the risk
Rapa Nui sits far into the Pacific. That is why the statues feel like a world, not a museum annex. It is also why a cancelled flight, a lost passport, or a missing park QR is a bigger deal than the same problem in Puerto Varas. Build slack. Travel insurance with a policy you have actually read is part of how we fly to remote Chilean chapters.
The island is expensive relative to mainland Chile. Flights, lodging, and tours add up quickly on a short stay. Budget before you lock five nights. Hanga Roa is the base. Framework: Easter Island hotels.
Arrival at IPC is a small-airport day. Transfer into Hanga Roa, check in, eat something easy, go to bed. Do not plan a major site loop on landing. That is the same landing discipline we use after Calama and after a long haul into SCL. Isolation makes the temptation worse, because you paid for the hop and want the statues immediately. The statues will still be there after you sleep.
Month choice affects seat availability more than rain. Best time to visit Easter Island is shoulder versus peak. Wind still gets a vote either month.
What to pack for a small-airport hop
- Passport, return ticket proof, lodging confirmation, any required entry form, park ticket QR offline
- Layers, rain shell, sun protection, closed shoes for sites
- A power bank. Island days still run on a phone for tickets and maps in town.
- eSIM already installed. Do not make IPC your first activation experiment.
- Cash in pesos for small town purchases. ATMs and card reliability are “usually fine,” not a personality.
Download maps and confirmations on Santiago Wi-Fi. Remote coastal sites can feel offline even when Hanga Roa texts go through.
Would we tell friends to treat this like a mainland hop?
No. We would tell them to treat it like a remote chapter with a single practical runway. Book early. Sleep in Santiago on both sides. Finish entry and park steps before you shop for sunset viewpoints.
Can you fly from elsewhere in Chile? Visitor reality is Santiago to IPC. Do not plan a Puerto Montt to island shortcut.
Can you do this and Patagonia in one short vacation? Only if the vacation is long. We prefer two regions. Choose.
Is the flight the scary part? The flight is ordinary. The scarce seats and the paperwork are the parts people underestimate.

We would buy the Santiago seats first, sleep east of Centro the night before, and let the Pacific do what it does. Isolation is the reason the island stays itself. Plan for that on purpose.
